A TIME OF MADNESS
Robert Early
ISBN: 0 86921 007 6
A Time Of Madness is a topical novel about a turbulent time. It sweeps from the back alleys of Johannesburg to the sweltering hell of the terrorist war in Rhodesia's stark Zambezi Valley.
Lance Koster is a ruthless young thug whose sordid, petty hold-up in the notorious Hillbrow suburb misfires into a vicious knifing and death. To escape arrest he hurriedly leaves South Africa to join the Rhodesian army, little realizing that he has traded one savage existence for another--the remorseless fight against terrorism.
So begins Robert Early's cracking first novel about raw violence in contemporary Rhodesia, and of the dogged determination of Richard Kelly, the case-hardened detective inspector in Salisbury's special Branch, to maintain his brand of justice in the face of the erupting menace.
Kelly is investigating the burning down of a remote mission station and the disappearance of its inhabitants when an act of horrific barbarism pierces his cynicism and impels him into a crusade against vengeance. Detailed police work and Kelly's obsessive drive lead him first into the pursuit of the killer gang and then into the heart of the Communist organization directing the terrorist incursions. Kelly's disregard of established police procedure and his acute perception of human nature help him through one crisis after another.
The parallel stories of Kelly and Koster, caught up in the tragic conflict, are grippingly told as the chain of events races to the unbearably tense climax.
Breathtaking in its pace, A Time of Madness is a vivd novel of action with shrewd characterization, rare moments of tenderness and an incisive social commentary on the effects of the climate of violence. It is neither a work of fiction nor of concrete fact. Some of the incidents described can be found on official files, others never happened.
