(OPEN-GROUND FLOWERS Including the description and cultivation of Annual Flowers, Perennials and Bulbous of Full Earth follow various classifications indicating the use of these plants and the time of their flowering of Garden plans With examples of their ornamentation in various kinds etc.)

Through their dynamism, their entrepreneurial spirit and their early relationships with the Jardin des Plantes, through their wealthy and demanding clientele, the Vilmorin-Andrieux family were associated with the beginnings of the horticultural movement, of which they were largely the driving force. The Revue Horticole was born in 1829 from an initiative of the authors of Le Bon Jardinier, anxious to better support a "plant news" that had become rampant. The pagination, the format, the iconography, the quarterly frequency of this magazine did not, however, manage to reflect the incredible acceleration of horticultural development, nor the increase in species and varieties available for cultivation. Gardeners, as frenzied and happy breeders, will be particularly indebted to them for high-value seeds in the vegetable and floral fields.

The natural corollary to this privileged situation in the distribution of seeds was the publication of cultivation reminders. These small booklets quickly evolved into two real manuals: Vegetable Plants and Flowers for the Ground , the latter title containing in its most accomplished edition, in addition to a plant dictionary, thematic lists of uses and even examples of staging given by the greatest landscapers of the time.

The first edition of F leurs de Plein Terre was published in 1863.

The second edition dates from 1865 and contains 1,291 pages.

The third edition is from 1870. It has 1,563 pages and nearly 1,300 figures.
