"Portugal's Guerilla War" is a book length report of a trip the South African correspondent Al J. Venter took to Guinea Bissau in 1971. During the several weeks he spent there, Venter travelled with Portuguese troops as they battled PAIGC guerillas. His trip included an opportunity to travel deep into the jungle with a unit of Afro-Portuguese special commandos. Guinea Bissau is a relatively small country and Venter had an opportunity to fairly report the situation from the Portuguese perspective.

The value of this book is as a first person account of an African War of Decolonization. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to start colonizing Africa and they were the last European power to leave in 1974. The South African reporter Al J Venter began covering the wars of decolonization in the early 1960's and closely followed them through their end in the 1990's. Although sympathetic to the Portuguese, Venter was no propagandist. In Guinea Bissau, Venter acknowledged the organizing genius of Amiclar Cabral and the toughness of the PAIGC guerillas.

"Portugal's Guerilla War" is a fascinating first person account from a distant Cold War battlefield. I enjoyed this well written account because their was some nuance in Venter's portrayal of the conflict. This attempt at balance is missing in so many accounts of that time period. Students of the African Wars of Decolonization will enjoy this book. Highly recommended!
