THE REPUBLICAN PALACE
Copperplate engraving by the artist H. Catenacci (Hercule Louis Catenacci). A 19th-century French painter, illustrator, and engraver. Born in Ferrara, Italy, in 1816, he later moved to France, where he built a career illustrating books and journals.
Catenacci was known for his detailed and precise compositional style and created a wide variety of work, from architectural studies to landscape watercolors. His illustrations covered a diverse range of subjects, including:
- Architecture and antiquities in Rome, such as the Acqua Paola Fountain and the Basilica of St. Sabina
- The tombs of the Rajahs of Jhansi in India
- Landscapes in Portugal, including the Palace of Mafra and the city of Porto
- Historical scenes and figures for publications like Histoire de la Révolution Française
His work was frequently featured in 19th-century French publications, such as the travel magazine Le Tour du Monde. Many of his engravings were created after his own drawings or after photographs by other artists, like Louis Rousselet. Catenacci died in Paris in 1884.
The frame measures 33cm x 27cm. The actual artwork measures 17cm x 13.5cm (visible area). The artist signature is in center bottom. There's another name (Looks like "Tillerrand" in the bottom right hand. (Maybe the printer/publisher?)
The provenance is taped to the back of the frame. The picture was purchased in Sienna, Italy on September 21, 2007 for the sum €300. The handwritten card translates (according to Google) "Copper Engraving by H. Catenacci in 1895. And authenticated by the seller.
As was common practice this would seem to have been printed after the artists death.
