THE GOLDBERGS OF LEIGH RANCH
W.F. Arnold
ISBN: 0 86920 222 7
The fourth volume in the Men Of Our Time series, this work is, in fact, the story of a family and their farm--the Goldberg family who have been established in Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia/Rhodesia) since 1912. Most of the seven children of Simon and Esther Goldberg--five sons and two daughters--grew up in the country and all of them have made significant contributions to its evolution from a primitive area in South-Central Africa to a community with a progressive agricultural industry, a considerable mining industry, broadly based manufacturing concerns and a sophisticated economy.
The Goldberg brothers have played a part in all these developments but their major share has been farming. their great agricultural enterprise, Leigh Ranch in the eastern part of the country, was in its heyday one of the largest tobacco producers as well as the home of an outstanding cattle herd. Their pedigree Afri-canders and their beef-cattle slaughter stock were among the finest in the country.
Along with their farming activities, all members of the family took s notable part in the general life of the community, the sisters as distinguished nurses and the brothers in local and charitable interests. Bennie, who was a lawyer by profession, was also active in public life and a member of the parliament of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland throughout its ten year life and a cabinet Minister for half that time.
Rhodesia has now become Zimbabwe, and it is no small measure due to the enterprise, hard work and humanity of the Goldbergs and others like them that the country is poised for a future which could be a model for Africa.
