In August 1980 one of the finest police forces in any country of any era ceased to be. Rhodesia's British South Africa Police became the Zimbabwe Republic Police after the country's recent transformation following a bloody civil war.
The seeds of that conflict were sewn in the late 19th century when Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company's pioneer column, escorted by his own company's police, rode north from South Africa into a largely unknown and sparsely inhabited land which promised much adventure and riches for men of calibre.
During the next 90 years wars were fought and rebellions crushed but overall the British system of justice and organization took root and flourished in this new and fertile land.
Interwoven in the bitter-sweet history of Rhodesia and Zimbabwe is that of the BSA police, and no-one with a passing interest in Southern Africa can ignore the huge role the force played in shaping the destiny of the country.
"The History of the British South Africa Police" is contained in two parts: the abridged and updated twin histories by the late Peter Gibbs, from the hardship of settlement in 1889 to the outbreak of WWII in 1939, as originally published in his now-rare early 1970s volumes; and by Hugh Phillips whose painstaking research covers the equally tumultuous years from 1940 to 1980.
It is a story of men and women who made a new and raw country their home, and gave service to it, many with their lives. It is a tale of fun and glamour, yet of triumph and tragedy. But, above all, it is completely factual.
