THE STORY OF RHODESIAN SPORT
Volume one 1889 - 1935
J. De L. Thompson
ISBN: 0 86920 150 6
This is a reprint of J. de L. Thompson's comprehensive History of Sport in Southern Rhodesia, 1889-1935, and comprises the first volume of a matching three-volume work.
First published in a small edition in 1935, Volume One is an intriguing and informative pictorial narrative of Rhodesia's sporting endeavor in the rugged early years. Famous names and famous games are recalled in detailed coverage of cricket, soccer, rugby, athletics, cycling, tennis, squash, badminton, shooting, hockey, swimming, yachting, rowing, fishing, boxing, bowls, golf, polo and horse racing.
Says the Prime Minister of Rhodesia, the Hon. I. D. Smith, in his forward: 'The reappearance of this work will bring pleasure to all Rhodesians. Virtually every facet of sport in our country, from the earliest days, has been dealt with by the author. But here we have something more than a record of men and women who were household names before the turn of the century. There are fascinating glimpses of an earlier way of life, and of the firm foundations which were laid for our outstanding achievements in the sporting sphere... To have these glimpses readily available for reference is something that will be welcomed by all.'
The second and third volumes of The Story of Rhodesian Sport, written by Glen Byom, take the story through to 1976.
