First it was the occupation of Mashonaland that gripped the publics imagination, followed 3 years later by the Matabele War, which saw the defeat of Lobengula and his warriors, then 3 years later it was the Matabele & Mashona uprisings. The UK public were hungry for news of these moments events at the end of the 19th century and so the major newspapers of the day published the stories of British daring-do in Africa, all in the name of the Empire.
